Heads Up: ODNR/Army Corps of Engineers performing Bird Management at Mosquito Lake State Park

Posted on November 27th, 2011

If you are in area State Parks and see/hear an ODNR/parks officer appear to discharge his or her weapon into/toward a flock of waterfowl, do not be alarmed.

ODNR/Army Corps of Engineers is currently performing bird management activities in area state parks, such as Mosquito Lake State Park, due to overpopulation of waterfowl. The population of birds at the lake is becoming problematic, and this is being done to reduce bacterial contamination of the beaches and water that results from the deposits of excrement from these flocks of birds.

To do this, they are using special noisemakers called “bird-bangs”, which work similar to a gun-fired flare. They are not discharging their service weapon.

If you have questions regarding this activity, you can contact the Park Management at (330) 637-2856.

Please pass this on.

2011 Special Officers Election Held May 5, 2011

Posted on May 5th, 2011

A special election was held this evening to elect a new President, Vice President, and Secretary to serve for the remainder of 2011.

President Bob Woofter, elected in January of this year, tendered a letter of resignation to the Trustees after the March officer’s meeting, which he then rescinded within a day or two of the initial letter, and followed with a letter of dismissal to Appointed Trustee Jerry Usselman. At the April meeting, this information was presented by the Trustees to the club membership. After a discussion on these events, a motion was made by Mr. Woofter that the membership vote on whether or not to accept his resignation. A majority vote of no-confidence was cast by the membership,  and Mr. Woofter resigned his position.

Vice President Tim Johns (acting President) and Secretary Dick McClain, re-elected in January, announced to the membership at the beginning of tonight’s (May 5th) meeting that, due to personal reasons, they also formally resign their respective positions as officers of the club.

With the resignation, the Trustee’s took over proceedings, and called for nominations of new officers to fill the vacant positions.

Nominated were:

  • President
    • Bob Wade
  • Vice President
    • Jerry Usselman
    • Ralph Gibbs
  • Secretary
    • Ted Brown

Given that only one member was nominated for the offices of President and Secretary, these offices were filled immediately by the nominees.

Ballots were collected for the office of Vice President, and Ralph Gibbs was elected to serve as Vice President.

At the end of the meeting, Bob Wade was asked if he was interested in appointing a trustee, and he stated that until further notice, Jerry Usselman is reinstated as Appointed Trustee, pending further discussion amongst the officers as to the final state of the Appointed Trustee position. Jerry pointed out last month that the position of Appointed Trustee was not really necessary any more, due to changes in license agency rules. (Historically, the position of Appointed Trustee served as License Agent with the State of Ohio.)

Thus, for the remainder of 2011, the officers shall be as follows:

  • President: Bob Wade
  • Vice President: Ralph Gibbs
  • Secretary: Ted Brown
  • Appointed Trustee: Jerry Usselman

The club thanks the former officers for their past service.
